Thank you for your prompt response Carol.  You're always a pleasure to deal with.  Unfortunately not enough of it nowadays!  I am very relieved to hear that white is still a current product - it is so hard to not only get a plain ironing board cover, but moreso in white.  Take care,

Hi Carol

When I got home from work on Monday (30th) your parcel was already opened! and waiting for me on the dining room table.  My daughter can't help herself!!!  She said "Mum, your ironing parcel has arrived and there's a piece of lavender in it!".I haven't had a chance to put on the ironing cover, will do so on the weekend.  Thank you so much for your 'prompt' service, I've decided it's my new way of shopping.  Everything looks wonderful - it's going to put a whole new complexion on the chore of ironing!  Again, many thanks for a wonderful service.  Cheers,

LINDY  NSW  April 2009

Dear Carol

The cover and underlay arrived on Thursday.  I fitted it yesterday and it is fantastic!  The color is exactly what I hoped!  Thanks for your communication and care and hope you are enjoying your Easter?  Regards

Hi Carol

The package arrived on Friday and I'm very impressed with everything. The new ironing board underfelt and cover have been fitted and work exactly as described - definitely worth every cent. And the shoe bags are just what I was looking for so they have a trip to Europe to look forward to in June!  Thanks so much.

RACHEL  NSW  April 2009

Hello Carol

I received the lovely bay leaves and bookmark..;)  Very sweet of you to send a thank you.  My mother in law loves her ironing board cover and we too are still very happy with ours.  Have a great weekend.

Dear Carol,

Thank you for the very quick arrival of my Fitz Like a Glove ironing board cover and felt underlay which were easily fitted onto my ironing board and had me ironing within minutes.  When the opportunity arises, you may be sure that I shall recommend Fitz Like a Glove which turns ironing from a chore into a pleasure.

Kindest regards,

ROBYN  ACT  March 2009

Dear Carol

I almost didn’t open up the parcel from you with the felt but I am so glad I did.  Thank you so much for the sweet little gift of the ironing cloth.  I have never had one before so I will look forward to the next time when I need one.  Would have to be an improvement on a man’s hanky.  Best wishes to you and Victor on your very successful business which has come about because of your commitment to detail and professionalism.  Well done.

Hi Carol

Just wanted to let you know the cover arrived the following day.  I couldn't believe how prompt Australia Post was. Thank you very much - it is perfect.  Cheers

You guys ROCK!

I haven't even SEEN this fabled ironing board cover yet but by golly I'm about to place an order for one. I've read enough to convince me that this is the only way! How utterly brilliant to create top-quailty products by employing people with disabilities. Good on you! I only wish more people were brave and persistent enough to set up a business like yours (not to mention to write so damned well about it; I edit for a living, believe me I know!).  Keep up the good work. I would wish you luck but I don't think you need it!  Best regards,

ALEX  NSW  February 2009

Hi Carol,

The best feedback you can have is a  returning customer so here I am.  I loved my new ironing board cover so much I am now buying one for my 86 year old mother-in-law who insists on doing her own ironing.  I know it will make her ironing job easier.  In the couple of months that I have been using my ironing board cover it has transformed my ironing experience to being an absolute pleasure.  Not many people can boast that about ironing.  Thanks

MARILYN  VIC  January 2009

Carol,

Many thanks...the ironing board cover arrived this afternoon, well ahead of schedule.  My husband Rob, says he loves tension structures...he’s a materials handling  engineer (builds really big conveyor systems) he was so enthusiastic about the cover I let him install it.  He was very impressed (unfortunately it didn’t extend to any help with the ironing).  I had to give it a try immediately and it is wonderful.....I used to spent most of my time arguing with the old cover ...this one is just a dream to use.  Thanks again for the cover.

MARILYN  VIC  December 2008

Carol,

I had notice of the arrival of a receipted parcel at the PO yesterday, and picked up the parcel – which proved to be from you – today.  This is just to acknowledge its receipt, and to tell you that I am delighted with the products.  The “log lugger” is even better now than when we purchased ours from you:  I love the inclusion of the bars which not only strengthen, but will provide shaping.   And the size of the lugger is bigger too!   And I think our grandson will enjoy his truly masculine-looking laundry bag – and may even use it!  I certainly will spread the word whenever appropriate.   I think that yours is an organization which merits wide publicity.   And your “personalized” approach is very appealing!!  Best wishes to you and those with whom you work.  We hope that it is a good Christmas – and a wonderful New Year for you all.

MARCIA  NSW  December 2008

Hi Carol,

Thank you for parcel which we picked up yesterday.  All looks terrific and the Brass Bristle Brush is a success. After I pick up the best bread available here we will try the Kanimbla Olive Oil tonight. Thankyou for everything and we wish you a fun xmas with friends and/or family and all that is good for 2009. ciao,

MIEKE  NSW  December 2008

Dear Carol and Victor

The parcel arrived yesterday right on cue! My friend John's came at the same time and he is very pleased with it, couldn't put it on quickly enough and was thrilled with the result!  He is such a good friend and was very good company for Margaret before she died; would sit and talk to her for hours - which was great.  Hope you have a very enjoyable Christmas and 2009 shapes up well for you !

Fond Regards

Dear Carol,

I am just letting you know how I found out about you.I must have bought one from the guide dogs many years ago and since then have ordered another one. This now has a hole in it so I have now ordered my third. This time I went online and purchased a set that includes the underlay , cover and ironing sheet. What a wonderful idea. I always make sure that when I start my ironing I have a hanky close by to use - this will be no more. Also by ordering online I got to choose my own colour - I have always been given a green one.  Thank you

Hi Carol

Thank you for your help.  I received the parcel on Friday and am very happy with the products.  I won't go so far as to say it makes ironing fun, but it does make it so very much easier!  I will certainly be recommending it to friends and family.

Carol,

I found out about you originally from the Essential section of The Herald last year. I was in an 'ironing board cover crisis' and I rang and spoke to you. I subsequently ordered two covers and an underlay and have had no problems at all. The product is fabulous!  Thanks,

This is without a doubt the best ironing board cover I have had in 39 years. It is great and I will be telling all my friends about it.  Thank you

I have bought several Fitz like a Glove, for myself and my daughter. I bought my first one at Lincraft so you can see how long I've enjoyed using them. (if ironing could be called enjoyable).  It is your fault I haven't bought any recently because they last so long.  Thanks for a great product.

JANN  WA  August 2008

Dear Carol & Victor

I bought my Fitz Like A Glove ironing board cover from you when you had a stall in Greenwood Plaza, North Sydney.  I'm not sure of the exact year, but I was working in North Sydney at the time, so it was between January 1995 and July 1998.  After all that time, a few washes and much use, the fabric has finally worn through in one tiny spot.  Amazing!  A few years later, when a neighbour constantly complained about the poor quality and fit of her ironing board cover, I bought one for her (and a spare for me).  I know she has gone on to buy more for members of her family.    I have just placed an on-line order for a new Fitz Like A Glove (and new underlay) and I know it will be of the same excellent quality and fit as my original.  You may wonder why I needed another one when I had a spare?  My son “stole” it when he finally moved out of home permanently and “couldn’t cope” with the ironing board cover his girlfriend had.  Actually, he begged me for it and I gave in!  Congratulations on your remarkable products; I wish you continued success.  It’s the simple things in life that make us happy, isn’t it?  Best wishes

HELEN  NSW  August 2008

I originally heard about your product in a Patchwork magazine.  I purchased a Fitz like a glove cover about 5 years ago and just recently a small tear arrived that grows each time I use it so I am now buying another of your covers as there is no other product on the market I would consider. As you are aware patchwork quilters do iron alot and so reliability is key for me.  Thanks for such a great product.

BRONWYN  NSW  August 2008

Carol,

We received our fitz like a glove.  It really is a far better product than anything I have been able to find in stores here in the Washington, DC metro area.  Your product fits my “vintage” ironing board (family pass down).  It really makes ironing much easier.  Have a great weekend.

HAL  USA  AUGUST 2008

Dear Carol

I find your ironing board covers the best ever!  Hence I am stocking up! I recommend them to friends too.  Cheers and thanks

JULIE  NSW  August 2008

Hi Carol

I just wanted to let you know that I love my new ironing board cover.  My board came originally with a flimsy cover and a foam underlay that had actually melted in parts to the board and had to be peeled off.  The new felt underlay is thick and luxurious and fabulous to iron on and I love the crisp white cotton cover.  It's so much easier to iron without having to readjust the cover the whole time.  And it looks great too.  I am thrilled with it and will definitely recommend it to everyone.

Kind regards

AMELIA  NSW  July 2008

Dear Friends:

I ordered a "Fitz like a glove IBC" at the beginning of July 2008, imagine my surprise when it arrived 7/9/08.  As soon as I got home, I opened it (practically tore it) and to my amazemen, another surprise -  a very well made IBC.  Both quality & workmanship beyond my expectations.  For the past 25 years I've made my covers from whatever I could get my hands on.  The last cover flimsy, wrinkly & cheaply made, bought from a from a sewing notions place.  Each time I tried to iron, it was a nightmare. I'd given up. I was visiting one of my favorite sites Pattern Review.com saw your cover, ordered & looking forward to a well pressed shirt. Eureka!!  Please share this with Victor, Victor's mother and last but not least, each of your workers that take part in a well made product, a rarity nowadays. Be assured of my continued patronage & referrals.  Most sincerely,

CARMEN  USA  July 2008

Dear Carol and Victor

Just wanted to let you know that the postman brought the ironing board cover for my Dad to the door just before 1pm today.   It is perfect.  Firstly, thank you so much for the prompt posting and for being so friendly and professional.  Secondly, it was so nice to receive the pressing cloth as a gift for dad. He will be impressed.  He will make a comment along the lines of "that's what I call good old fashioned service".  I will fit the cover and underlay for him later on this week.  Then surprise him with his gift.  Nice little touch! - thanks again.  Lovely doing business with you.

BARBARA  NSW  June 2008

Thank you Carol

I received my parcel on Wednesday and promptly got rid of my old cover and foam underlay.  Then, with very clear instructions, I had your product on my board and in use in no time at all!  Can't believe I'd ever say ..."I look forward to ironing". Will the novelty wear off?  Many thanks for an excellent product and wonderful customer service.  I will have no hesitation recommending 'Fitz Like A Glove' to my friends.  Kind regards

LYN  NSW  May 2008

Dear Carol,

Just a quick note to let you know the Fitz Like A Glove ironing board cover+felt+cloth arrived in Friday morning's (18/4/2008) mail.  I gave my Mum's 40ish year old Frazer board a thorough spit&polish and put on the cover which fits snugly and perfectly.  Apart from a few age spots on its legs, the board with its new cover looks as good as new, and should be good for at least another 40 years.  My dear Mum (recently departed) would have been very pleased with the result.

I must thank you for your rapid and helpful reply to my query through to final receipt of the parcel within four days of order placement - superb.  It is very refreshing to find someone like you Carol, enthusiastic and passionate about her chosen field of endeavor.  Great old-fashioned and personalised service from someone who believes in her products, but more importantly, someone who makes a genuine effort to please and satisfy the customer.  Nice little elegant touches included in the package - overall a very pleasing experience - all businesses should operate in this fashion, highly recommended.  Kindest regards and the best of wishes for enduring success for your business.

PS.  Hmmm, now back to that mountain of laundry which needs ironing!

Hi Carol

Many thanks for the new Log lugger. I didn't expect to receive a new one for a broken dowel but I can now see why you are still in business. I much appreciate the GIFT and the fact that you take the trouble to write a personal note with all your dispatches. May you continue to prosper in your business and I will certainly

give you a plug whenever I can.  Thanks once again.

Dear Carol,

The shoe bags have met my expectations, they are sturdy and reliable and look good.  Buying from you was quick and efficient and I would feel comfortable referring others.  Regards

Hi Carol

We bought several things from you recently, including the Fitz Like a Glove ironing board cover which is fantastic – the only thing we’ve found so far to properly cover our unusually-sized ironing board.  I was looking at the laundry bags and note you’ve got some blue tapestry ones back in stock. Are you able to email me a picture of the fabric so I can see what it looks like? Is the other option the chocolate brown plain one or are there other colours or patterns available at the moment?  Many thanks  Rhiannon

RHIANNON,

I don't have images, but will put samples in the mail to you today.  Take care, CAROL

Hi Carol

The samples have just arrived – thank you very much. The navy is especially nice; if you could put it on hold I’ll do an online order now.  Many thanks

Hi Carol

Have received everything and all is great.  I want to order 1 more set please.  If you still have my credit card details, could you send me one more.  I have a friend and I want to give it to him for his birthday.  Thanks again.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for this confirmation, I look forward to stable ironing.  I may have seen your product at exhibitions, but also in magazines.  The most likely would be Australian Patchwork and Quilting and I knew that there was someone making a quality IBC in the context of providing work for people with disabilities and that you were out of the metropolitan area, so I googled and found you.  Thanks

JANN  NSW  March 2008

Hi Carol

The parcel arrived promptly as always. We have been using the iron board covers for sometime now and find them great, particularly as the ironing for the B&B is constant. Thanks for keeping us informed of your other activities.  Thanks and go well, Stuart

Carol, like you said I would love this ironing board cover. I iron for a family of four, all adults. We have become spoiled having just about everything ironed. I’m retired and for some odd reason I love to iron. I have my Mothers old ironing board which the top is made out of wood, she received this as a wedding gift in 1938. The cover fits great and provides me with a ultra smooth surface. My iron glides across the cover, making it so much easier to iron.  Thanks Carol for this great product. I will be ordering another one to have on hand in the months ahead.

Carol

Just thought I would let you know my daughter really appreciated my gift of the brass bristle brush. She was a bit sceptical as she had tried other brushes. It is absolutely fantastic, can't believe how great it is and how much hair it picks up. Everyone is delighted particularly Hercules (the beagle) because he can join his owners on  the lounge) . Just wanted to let you know that I found another good use for your Brass Bristle Brush. It helps lift impressions from the carpet…doesn’t remove them completely but certainly speeds up the recovery process! Just thought you might like to know about that discovery!  Hugs

 Carol,

I bought one of your ironing board covers so many years ago that I can't remember when it was! I think I bought it from you at a stand you had at one of the shopping centres here in Dubbo, but honestly can't remember whether that's right. It's been a brilliant cover - never moves and rides up like the ones that used to drive me insane.   It has also worn incredibly well. I was quite comcerened when it started to wear out, as I had no idea whether your company still existed, or how I would find you. Fortunately, I used Google, with the search words "ironing board cover laced". Yours was the first site that appeared, and I remembered the Fitz Like a Glove name. I cheered!  Thanks for making such an outstanding product, and I'll look forward to receiving my replacement cover shortly.

I received the parcel on Tuesday.  Thrilled on how well the cover fits and somehow the ironing doesn't seem such a dreadful chore to do anymore.  Thank you for the friendly chat we had on the telephone and your excellent service.  Cheers

Dear Carol,

I'm so sorry I never told you how happy Ellie was with my gift. I've never seen anyone so thrilled with an ironing board cover! She even showed it to friends when they came to visit.   Thank you for the best shopping experience I've ever had!  Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you and yours.”

“Hello Carol

Thank you for your email....it is nice to know that you care what your customers think! My answers to your questions follows:

1. I am very happy with my ironing board cover and it is holding up to all my expectations. I was looking for one that did not "move" when I needed to drag something big across the ironing board because I am a quilter and iron lots of big quilts. My Fitz like a glove cover is perfect.....it allows me to drag quilts which ever direction I like to iron them and the cover does not move a fraction...........wonderful.....saves lots of frustration!!!!!!!!!!!

2. The thing that I like best about my Fitz Like a Glove ironing board cover is that it does what it says it will do.....that is ...NOT MOVE, SLIP, BUCKLE, CREASE etc. it stays in place perfectly.

3. I was very impressed by the prompt service in receiving my order and the little extras you included...........I believe you are a trustworthy organisation and can confidently recommend you to my friends…..I do trust you…

Wishing you the best in you business.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”

 “Hi Carol,

That's fine about postage and packaging. No, it's not a gift for Barbara. She's actually going to bring it to Ireland for me at Christmas. It sounds a bit weird, it's a present for my boyfriend. He has searched everywhere for a cover to fit his ironing board but can't get one. He said if he was to only get one thing for Christmas this is what he would want. (This sounds very nerdy I know! He's normally mad as a hatter!). Anyway I just went on Google looking for ironing board covers and yours sounded great! I never thought I could learn so much about anything so simple. He will be delighted with both me and the cover! Thanks for the email,   Kind Regards,”

Emer, Ireland December 2007

 “Carol,

I know that an email came from you some time ago and now I can’t find it but….it seems to me that you had requested information regarding our use of the brass bristle brush…..which I do love. The only problem is that I can’t even find it when I need it….it seems to ‘travel’ and not put back where it is supposed to be kept! I have learned that there are some fabrics that need to be brushed with caution but it is great on rugs and the more hearty of fabrics…such as a hefty velvet or napped fabrics as well as the rugs. Great invention especially for those of us with long haired cats and sewers!

Hope all is well with you…I love seeing the photos of your property on your website…looks like heaven! …Take care and all the best. I sure hope that your sales are doing well ….I still love my ironing board covers and the brush too…think of you often as those items are in use!  As always”

“Dear Carol

  1. we haven’t managed to wear out the brass brush yet in spite of our best efforts;

  2. it gets rid of dog hair!;

  3. I look forward to our annual chats;

  4. I refer you to people at least once a year and imagine that will continue.  If one is in the market for the items you sell, it is hard to go past you and your products.

I don’t recall when we last chatted Carol, but it was an enjoyable experience as usual… Regards, Denna  PS have to examine my Xmas shopping list and see if there is anyone else I can give a log-lugger to!”

“Carol – My ironing board cover has arrived and is already installed on my board. It fits perfectly! The ironing board was my grandmother’s and has endured a series of ill-fitting covers over the years since it’s quite old and clearly no longer of a standard size. So, finding your cover that fits so well is a real treat. As to how I found you, I went to Google, typed in “ironing board cover” and I think first on the list was your website. I found your story so appealing and your description of the product so perfect that I couldn’t resist. Well, I resisted a while because the cost of postage doubled the cost of the product but in the end, I treated myself in honor of my Mom, as I mentioned in my note. Just to complete the tale, I have attached my Mom’s obit as it appeared in the Brisbane paper recently. I think your story and company are wonderful and will certainly recommend you to others.”

Lucy USA November 2007

“Dear Carol,

Thank you for your email. We (ironing board cover, felt underlay and me) are doing well. The underlay has lost a little bulk and I have gained some.

The Fitz Like a Glove cover is still going strong despite the bashing I give it. A lot of non-ironing gets dumped on it - it's sort of a temporary desk space. I am ashamed of this, but ironing boards are easy to move out of the way and are always just the right height. In answer to your 4 questions:

1. Yes I am getting the wear I expected.

2. Shrinkage - the (5 years old) underfelt has shrunk a bit but not as much as most do.

3. I like the personal touch & your obsession with quality products & the fact that you are supporting people with disabilities.

4. Yes - I am comfortable referring you to friends.

Thank you for the Gift Certificate.  Kind regards.

“Carol

Thanks for the reminder.

Answers to questions.

1. Yes I am getting the wear from the cover. Thank you.

2. I like the way it fits onto the ironing board and holds firm.

3. I like your service and the way you package the purchases. We are made to feel very special. Thank you.

4. Yes I have mentioned you to friends.

Thank you for reminding me about the gift certificate. I will get back to you if I want to use it. Thanks again.”

“Thank you for your e-mail. I will now respond to your questions:

1. I most certainly am getting the wear from my Fitz Like a Glove Ironing Board Cover. One of the best items I have ever purchase - it is fabulous! I still have my original on the Board which I purchased many, many years ago. I purchased one last year for my daughter-in-law and she too seems very satisfied with it.

2. I just love it because once put on the Board, it does not move!

3.I have found the service you provide excellent and furthermore your product is as good as you claim - which unfortunately is not always the case in advertising these days.

4. I would have no problem in referring this product to friends and relatives.”

“Hello Carol,

Just thought I would send you a quick note. I have had my new ironing board cover for almost a year now…I can honestly say that I wonder how I lived without it before. No more having the cover roll up as I move fabric over it to iron the next spot...what a relief to not be frustrated by that any more...Love the product! Thanks again for a great product and excellent customer service. Very satisfied customer, expat living in Malaysia”

“Carol,

Thanks so much! My cover arrived on Monday and I put it on that evening. I told my fellow sewers on Sunday at the Newborns In Need work meeting that I had won second place in the Pattern Review Charity Sewing Contest and I was getting a new ironing board cover. I've been telling some other sewers about the cover I was getting. Now that I have it, I can take the picture along with me to show everyone.

Thank you for supporting the Charity Sewing Contest, it's nice to receive a reward for something I try to do on a regular basis. Right now our group is working on putting together 300 Christmas totes to deliver to the hospitals in our area next month. Each tote will include a receiving blanket, gown or sleeper, hat, booties, burp cloth, toy, bracelet, onesie, and a flannel stocking that can be a Christmas tree ornament. Some of the items are sewn, most hats and the booties are knitted or crocheted. We have a lot of volunteers working on getting these items together!  Thanks again!”

I was thinking kind thoughts of you, and our recent business transaction whilst doing the ironing yesterday. I was preparing the starched damask napkins for our next dinner party, and the job is actually quite pleasant now, thanks to your timely invention.

By the way, several of our guests have commented on the crisp linen sheets and pillow cases - I dry them on the line after a light starching, then press them with some eucalyptus oil added to the water in the atomiser. Always a good result. Cheers and best wishes”

“Hello Carol,

I bought an ironing board cover at the Murrumbidgee Field days - I think it was in 2001 and have used it constantly since. It finally gave up recently & started to rip.  Shows its a great product. I'm looking forward to getting the new one - I love yellow which I don't think was available back then.  Regards”

Subject- Fitz Like A Glove Disaster

“Good evening,

I'm having a minor crisis here today - after threats of death to my 6 year old if he opened the nail polish bottle… well, now my beautiful ironing board cover (which I love) has a glittery burgundy nail polish stain right in the middle. Have you any suggestions aside from dabbing eternally with nail polish remover (which is not working all that well)? I'm a bit worried that leaving it still quite prominent and them ironing over it might do something horrible to my clothes. Regards,

Penny

PENNY

This is a first!

First, take your cover off the board so the nail polish doesn't penetrate into your underlay. And definitely don't iron on the nail polish. You'll just set it so it can't come out. Second, we need to experiment here, so will get back to you tomorrow. Third, don't kill your son. Childhood is about experimentation and pushing the boundaries. Think back to your childhood. I'm on his side. As a child, my parents wanted to kill me a gazillion times, but once I reached adulthood, they were grateful they let me live!!!!! You'll hear from us tomorrow. Take care,

CAROL

PENNY,

The only solvent that will remove nail polish from fabric is acetone. All my nail polish removers contain acetone and one also contains acetone and amyl acetate, another recommended solvent for removing nail polish. Which is why I've never had a problem removing nail polish from fabric.Your nail polish remover is perhaps the safer and softer approach, acetone free nail polish remover. You can purchase pure acetone in small quantities from hardware stores and some chemists.  It's handy to have around the house, in a safe place, away from 6 year olds, because it removes paint, varnish, lacquer, melted plastic and adhesives from items. Here's the best way to approach this. Please keep in mind it takes some time to remove the polish because you can only do a little bit at a time, to prevent the polish from smearing and spreading. First: If the polish is quite hard, soften it first with a hair dryer. Second. Lay the spot face down, on a hard surface, over a layer of paper towels. Third: Working from the back, dab the acetone on IN SMALL DABS with cotton wool. Change the cotton wool frequently to keep it clean.  You have to keep dabbing until the polish is completely removed. Fourth:  Once the polish has been removed, clean the area with a small amount of methylated spirits. This works as an antidote to the acetone. Like removing paint from brushes and then washing them in soap and water. Fifth: Soak the cover overnight in a laundry detergent solution and wash
the next day. I'm not sure if the Buttercup colour will stay in with this approach, but as you're dabbing in a small area, it will limit any discolouration from spreading. I use this technique when I spill nail polish on fabric and it has always worked for me. I just needed to check my bottle of nail polish remover to see the ingredients and also check my gargantuan library of stain remover books! The secret ingredient is the solvent acetone. Penny, please let me know how you go. It's a pleasure to be able to help you with this. Take care,

CAROL

Thanks Carol,

Yes, the nail polish remover I grabbed in haste is one which is acetone free, and hasn't been terribly successful. Hubby's at the supermarket at the moment, and will hopefully get some with acetone. Extra frustrating as we've temporarily moved house for a few months and left lots of stuff behind at the "other" house, including (of course) the acetone nail polish remover - after all, why would I need it?

And yes, I won't kill my son, tempted as I am. My mother often comments that she's glad she didn't kill my brother when he was young - he's now very handy for reaching high things, lifting heavy things, and fixing computers.

I'll let you know how I get on. It had gone through to the underlay, but only barely - it's a slight discolouration on the underlay, probably not enough to worry about, though I might try a quick dab with the nail polish remover to see what happens. Cheers,

Penny

Reply From Penny On Thursday Morning

HI again Carol,

Just thought I'd update you on my progress - the acetone nail polish remover worked much better than the other stuff, and had the nail polish out in less than 10 minutes. I didn't have any metho to hand (everything I need is always at the "other" house) so I had to skip that step - also didn't use the hairdryer because I don't even know where it is! I ended up soaking it for nearly 24 hours, as we lost power for a while so I couldn't use my machine (it never rains, it pours!). But in the end, it's come up quite well - there's no nail polish colour left, just a sort of pale grayish mark where the polish was, which is probably only noticeable because I know it's there. There doesn't appear to be any loss of the buttercup colour, phew.

Thanks for your help - it seems the acetone was indeed the magic ingredient, despite what I'd read in my hasty search through internet stain removal web pages!

Now next time someone asks you in a panic, you'll know the answer straight off! Cheers,” End of story: Fitz Like A Glove Disaster!

The package arrived on Friday, August 31 - just one week after you sent it! I haven't opened it yet since it is a gift for my sister-in-law, Ellie. I expect to see her in a few days and I'll send you a note then. Just as a reminder, I found out about your company by searching the web for a cover for a small ironing board.

“Hi Carol,

Thank you very much Carol. I received my great ironing board cover and underfelt yesterday and immediately fitted it on my board and ironed for the rest of the morning. It is certainly the best cover I have ever used and it was a pleasure to do the ironing….the cover is so snug and fits perfectly and I can't begin to tell you just how thrilled I am with my purchase. I will certainly be highly recommending your product to my family and friends.

I have just read your amusing articles "The Ironing Board Cover Lady" and had a good laugh. Congratulations and thank you again,”

My 14 year old son is also handicapped physically and mentally, so this is one way I can say Thank You.”

Doesn't time fly! Things are going well - though I suppose the ironing board cover needs a wash! My husband really loves his log lugger - he tells everyone who comes what a little wonder it is - and he thinks two would be nice - one each for the two fires he lights regularly. So I'll order him another. Keep up the good work.”

Thanks for your message. You make me laugh, it was a good thing that the ironing lady left, and my covers are doing great just as you said they should. I have no idea what on earth she did but never mind it’s all good now as I have someone else helping me.

We have been purchasing your product for about 10 years now and I still think they are great. Please take care and I will definitely be in touch when we need new covers.

Many thanks for your wonderful customer service. Cheers”

“Hi Carol,

It's good to hear from you! To answer your questions:

1) The ironing board cover is showing no signs of wear at all, and looks just as it did the day we bought it.

2) We love ironing on such a smooth surface without ever having to adjust the ironing board cover and we love the way the iron glides over the ironing board.

3) We loved the personal service and interaction, just like now with this follow-up. We will be phoning you later today with our order. Blessings,

“Hi Carol:

Thank you for contacting me about the Ironing board cover that I purchased from you. I love it, it is without a doubt the best ironing cover that is made. My friends thought that I'd gone a little, looney to pay so much for it, and to order it from Australia. I have had to wash it once and it washes great. The pad is wonderful. I can not say enough good about it. The cover still looks brand new.  When mine begins to wear out I shall buy another one. It is 12:40 Friday AM here, so I think I had better go to bed. My best to you and yours.”

I'm very pleased with my new ironing board cover. The color is lovely, just as you said it would be. I like the neutral, natural color of driftwood and its soft, warm tone. “Hi Carol and crew.

I have wanted to email you for quite a while, but the keyboard on our computer has been faulty. We're up and running now, so I can send you a big thank you at last. I recently bought 10 ironing board covers from you, and had a very enjoyable phone conversation with you.... I was the lady who told you how much I loved the little touches you added to your deliveries - the lavender and book mark and letters etc. Those personal touches made it feel like I was getting a gift in the mail. I have given away all but one of the covers now, and haven't yet checked with my all my friends to see if they love them as much as I do my own. I know they will. Anyway I just wanted to tell you that you have a wonderful product and I do love the way you do your advertising and marketing. Keep up the good work and I look forward to contacting you in the future too. Thank you again. Kind regards.”

“Hi Carol,

I received the ironing board cover yesterday. Perfect fit, my husband helped me in cutting the wool underlay and putting on the cover. It is great!!! It is the best ironing board cover I have ever used. Thank you so much for your suggestion on getting the pure wool blanket for underlay, I picked up one for $8.00 at the Anglicare Shop. Thank you for including a lot of information about your company. I am sure my friends would be interested in your products and I will be happy to show my mother in law the cover. She has been looking in the shops for ages for a cover that would fit but to no avail. I am sure she will be very happy too.

What would I do without the internet and the Google search.   Thank you very much again and I wish you and Victor all the best. Regards,”

"I have read the story about how you started up in business and think you are very lucky to have found your niche. All your products look very impressive and I am very happy with the ironing board covers I have purchased - the present one is still in very good condition thanks to the first felt underlay I purchased. The philosphy of your company is fantastic. I for one grow tired of buying overseas made products that may be cheap but just don't last the distance which in the end is false economy and environmentally unfriendly. The little personal touches like the sprig of lavendar, bookmark and handwritten note are also appreciated.

Kind regards"

"Each of us has now had an iron on the new cover - no comment whatsoever from 18yo male, 51yo male said 'Gee, this is good to iron on' and this morning I nearly emptied the basket. Since ironing, with the exception of real table linen, is not one of my favourite jobs, I think that is a very positive sign.

I must say that the main reason I finally got around to ordering one was because of your user friendly website. The fact that you give your customers a choice in how to order and pay for your products made it so easy and quick for me. Delivery was also prompt as Christmas was so close. Thank you for a fantastic product that lives up to it's reputation and is Australian made."

“Dear Carol,
The parcel has arrived - with all the delightful trimmings - and of course the ironing board cover does what you say it does.  I haven't had one that fits properly for years - and I like my wide ironing board. The log bag hasn't been tested yet, but it looks pretty good.  I do appreciate well-made, functional items.  More power to you - I am sure this is the best way to undermine the  big retailers' view that the only thing anyone is interested in is the lowest possible price.   How did I find out?  Back from another fruitless search, I simply put 'ironing board covers' into Google Advanced Search - and up you came.  I already buy a number of things, like really good jam, on the Internet and I'm increasingly searching for things the local shops no longer have.  I think I shall send one of your ironing board covers to my friend in Boston - who unlike me, has a real battle with anything to do with the laundry, but is herself an architect who redesigns spaces to provide universal access.  Best wishes,”

This is to let you know that my extra small ironing board cover and underlay have just arrived. I've fitted the cover (easy!) and it's terrific. I found out about your website from your ad in Stitches magazine and I want to say it's a great website and your company is really super. The service has been impeccable (and I love the lavender too!) Many thanks and I'll be telling everyone I know about Interface".

Felicity TAS February 2005

"Hello Carol,

I gave two covers to friends this year. Keep up the good work and 'the cause' - my HOPE is that this will always remain a LOCAL industry".

Maggie WA November 2004

"Dear Carol,

Thank you for being so friendly on the phone - I enjoyed speaking to you. Now I know why you're so successful in business".

Mary NSW March 2000

"Dear Carol,

Your personal message really added to the pleasure of receiving my shoe bags and has prompted me to write to tell you how successful my original purchase of an ironing board cover from your firm has been. After several years of use, it shows no sign of wear and my only concern is that if it does eventually need replacing I just hope you will still be producing a similar product. Good luck".

Betty NSW September 2001

"Having been in business (House & Garden), I was interested in your approach! For someone like me who now lives in a small country town, it's great to have mail order available. Your personal touch is appreciated - & very important. The quality of the goods is excellent - strong and well designed. Good luck".

Philipa NSW August 1999

"I recently purchased one of your Fitz Like A Glove Ironing Board Covers while in Australia. I am writing to tell you it fits my ironing board and I am very pleased with its performance and appearance. I was particularly impressed with its packaging and presentation and your hand written note. I am a satisfied customer. Thought I would write to tell you that this 'Aussie' product is a winner in my home".

Tips For Success

Get more mileage out of your cover

After selling 90,000 covers, we've been intrigued to find that for 80% of customers, our cover lasts from 3 to 9 years, while others order more frequently. Our investigations have produced interesting results, which will help extend the life of your cover.

Underfelt

It's the quiet achiever of your ironing surface. You need good quality, thick felt under your cover for two, very good reasons.

• To provide a smooth, resilient surface for quicker ironing

and

•To insulate your cover from your metal board so that your cover lasts longer.

If your ironing surface isn't smooth and resilient, your iron snags your clothes as you iron, slowing you down and producing poor results.

Good underfelt prevents the metal top and edges from heating up and burning your cover from underneath. Contact with hot metal will dramatically shorten the life of your cover.

For smoother ironing and a longer life for your cover, always use good quality, thick felt, with a predominance of wool and cotton rather than synthetic, as this does better under heat. Never, ever use foam rubber as it compresses and solidifies under heat.

Just as important

Don't use pre-cut felt as it's always smaller than your board and exposes the metal edges, and hence your cover, to heat from your iron. Always trim the felt 2 to 3cms larger than your board so that the felt rolls over the edge, padding and insulating it all round the board.

Signs of trouble

If you see the mesh pattern from your board appearing on your cover, or your iron snags, or you can feel the metal edges, it's time to upgrade.

Water spillage

You will quite often spill water on your cover. No problem! Our covers are colour fast and washable. But if you dry the water with your hot iron (always tempting) the cover will deteriorate at about twice the normal rate. Damage typically appears in a circular pattern, at the back of your board. The fabric becomes brittle, discoloured and eventually tears.

Water soaks into the fibres causing them to expand. Applying a hot iron turns the water to steam. The steam expands and bursts through the fibres to escape. This weakens the fibres and over time causes a complete breakdown of the fabric. The occasional spill is OK, but regular iron drying is to be avoided.

We suggest

That you fill your iron over the sink if convenient, or keep a heat proof tray handy to put under the iron when filling, or let the spill dry naturally.

We've had a 100% success rate in improving the life of covers when these suggestions are followed. You should get thousands of hours of trouble free ironing out of your Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover and we get concerned if you don't.

How It All Started

Need is the mother of invention

but

The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover was a difficult birth.

It was created by Victor Pleshev, an architect, as a gift to help his mother with her constant struggle to keep her ironing board cover on her board. He used his 25+ years of building experience to design a simple crisscross tension system which keeps the cover drum tight and wrinkle free.

He gave it to her as a surprise. She was so delighted with its performance, she told all her friends. As mothers do!! To our amazement, her friends wanted one. As did their friends. Inadvertently, a business was born from the simple gesture of giving a gift.

There’s a saying that goes like this. Design a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door. NOT TRUE! The world puts obstacles in your way. Our ‘inadvertent business’ is more a tale about set backs and small victories than David slaying Goliath!

In the beginning, we had no idea there would be a significant demand for a better ironing board cover. Production facilities were our dining room table and a domestic sewing machine and overlocker. Victor was chief in charge of laying out and cutting and I was head seamstress. We made 500 covers like this. But we soon realised more than just a few people wanted a Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover.

Who will make them? We tried a number of sewing companies in Sydney. The last one pretty well summed up the attitude of the previous ones. When we arrived to pick up our order, we were met at the open roller door by the leading hand. The finished covers were packed in plastic bags. We ordered 500. One by one the bags were hurled through the doorway onto the driveway. Followed by the leading hand thrusting an invoice into our hand while shouting at us not to come back. “The covers are too difficult to make. Your high standard of quality is unreasonable. It is, after all, just an ironing board cover,” she barked!

Disappointed? No. Devastated. This was June 1994, smack in the middle of the recession we had to have. Companies wanted work. Didn’t they? On the drive back to our property at Ilford in rural NSW, we had time to absorb this development. We wanted our products made with love and care, because we care. Was this too tall an order?

Early next morning, we rang the NSW Government. I’d read in BRW magazine the Industrial Supplies Office was there to help people like us. Yes! They do help.

Our request? To make our products using people who have a disability; to keep the production in the Central Tablelands where we live; and to work with a company that wanted a teeny weeny business like ours. “We’ll be back in touch within 2 hours”, they said.

They rang an hour later. “Wangarang Industries in Orange NSW is very keen to see you”, they said. Only an hour and a half away, we met with Wangarang Industries that afternoon. It was a perfect match. Just like Goldilocks finding the right bed. And they’ve sewn every cover with love and care ever since. 90,000 and growing daily.

With that hurdle overcome, and with orders arriving via word of mouth and from small advertisements, we dipped our toes into the world of the retailer.

Our toes suffered severe frostbite. Retailers under whelmed us with lack of interest. Woolworths and Big W told us they buy cheap and push product out the door as quickly as possible. David Jones knew customers asked for the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover, but they don’t buy single products from one company. Coles Myer never returned our phone calls. Our hopes were raised by Hills Industries, who make ironing boards and covers. They asked to see a cover. Their response? “It’s a beautiful cover. The Rolls Royce of ironing board covers”, they said. “But we sell covers that are ‘Holdens’, not Rolls Royces’. You’ll sell a hundred”, they said. “No more.” I was gob smacked because they were so wrong. We’d already sold 2,000.

Back to the vexing question. How do we sell them? We also had another issue to resolve. We were disillusioned with the business ethic of all take and no give. Where the ‘bottom line’ is more important than the customer. We enjoyed our relationship with Wangarang Industries so much, we wanted to replicate that in the sale of our cover. Who sells and gives back to the community?

A business friend came to the rescue. The Guide Dog Association, she said.

The Guide Dog Association of NSW/ACT reluctantly trialled the cover in October 1995. It started like this. My phone call to them was met with little enthusiasm. It was virtually a ‘No Thank You’ on the telephone. But I quickly retorted they didn’t know what they were saying ‘No’ to until they’d seen the difference in our cover. I pointed out they were only a 4 hour drive away and we could be there at 9:30am next day. If that was OK, we’d be there. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I offered. After a hesitant agreement, I hung up before they could change their mind!

It’s now in their top 5 products. Ditto for The Guide Dogs of SA/NT and The Association For The Blind of WA. They’re our only national retail network. And we love our relationship with them.

But! We have a mortgage to pay, dogs to feed, and many more covers we want to sell. How do we sell more? Again, we wanted that warm, fuzzy relationship you get with nice people. We were like Goldilocks searching for the right bed. Direct marketing was that perfect bed. We’ve developed long lasting, personal, one-on-one relationships with our customers because of it.

Since 1994 our customers have prodded, nudged and pushed us into new areas. We started with one product and now have 5, with more on the drawing board. We turned our back on retailers and you rewarded us with a thriving, personal, international business via the internet and direct mail. The internet was very daunting when we first started and it’s now a vital part of our business. I vividly remember Peter Neeson, an early customer, gently but firmly prodding us into coming to grips with the 21st century! Sophie Hunt, another customer, is nudging us into a new product and is patiently waiting for the finished result. Our customers offer new ideas in their letters, emails, cards and phone calls. We’re in awe of their constant support and encouragement.

Discovery is a journey along the Yellow Brick Road. 90,000 people have followed the road to our door and we’ve been overjoyed. You can’t miss us. We’re straight ahead in the cottage that’s draped in honeysuckle. No key required. Your order form or phone call opens the door. It’s always a privilege to welcome you!
