When we were researching fabric to use for the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover, we discovered we were in a steep learning curve.
Just what is the best fabric to use? If we want to give you a 12 month wear and tear guarantee? And which will withstand the heat of an iron set to high?
And what is currently being used for ironing board covers?
So many cheaper ironing board covers were made of synthetic fabric. Made in Romania. Which looked like someone’s nightie. Burned easily. And had holes in them within the blink of an eye.
Then there were the ironing board covers that were made of curtain fabric. With acrylic backing.
These were a thin layer of synthetic fabric. Glued onto an acrylic backing that perished as quickly as foam underlays.
Cotton fabric with a cross weave isn’t as durable as fabric with a diagonal weave.

In the process of designing the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover for Margarita. My partner, Victor Pleshev, an architect, had a long list of criteria the cover had to fulfil.
After all, this was going to be a surprise gift for his mother.
And would be examined to the ‘nth’ degree by Victor’s father. Who. At the time. Was the leading coal mining engineer in Australia for coal preparation plants.
His eagle eye for detail was renowned. And is why he was at the apex of his industry.
Not only did the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover have to have the best anchor in the world to keep it snug and tight on Margarita’s board.
But.
What happens when she wants to fold her board up? To put it away.

Ironing board covers need an anchor. If we want them to stay on your board.
Much like a boat.
And a tent with its centre pole. Stretching the tent fabric to the outer edges and securing with a tent peg.
It has to have a reason not to move. Rather than be in free fall every time you twist and turn your garment on your board.
Suspender belts across a board are a popular form of restraint.
But they only do half the job.
When you iron, you twist and twirl your cover in all directions. Not just one.
Suspender belts tension your cover in one direction only. Side to side. But not back to front. Or on the diagonal.
Any force on top of your board, or at an angle to this direction, will wrinkle and move the fabric.

When designing an ironing board cover with a difference, there are many factors to take into consideration.
It’s not just a matter of copying what went before.
For my partner, Victor Pleshev, the architect who was designing the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover for his mother, Margarita, his criteria was firm in his mind.
It must NEVER move on her board.
No matter how she may be twisting a shirt. Or a pair of trousers. Across the surface.
You do look at what went before.
And there is nothing wrong with the basic design of ironing board covers.
They’re meant to cover the top of your board by shaping to the contours of your board.
All ironing board covers do that.
The difference lies in what’s underneath your board. [Read more…]

What you rarely know. When visiting any website. Is how. And why. A product is developed.
Many websites are impersonal. Are big brands. And probably don’t want you to know. The why!
Too many secrets lead to copies.
In my case. We are a small family business in rural Australia. And I really want you to know. The why!
Because it’s the story behind how the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover became an accidental business.
With more than 400,000 customers. In 30 countries.
It all begins with my partner, Victor Pleshev, an architect. And his mother, Margarita.
Hello. I’m Carol Jones. And some of the best products you and I own have the best stories about how they were created.
The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover has just such a story.
It was never meant to be a business. Just a gift from a son. To his mother. To help her with her ironing when she was recovering from a stroke.

My partner, Victor Pleshev, the architect who designed the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover for his mother. To help her with her ironing when she was recovering from a stroke. Realised we had a dilemma.
Packaging.
How were we going to package the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover?
We contacted packaging companies. And were flummoxed to discover we could have whatever packaging we liked. So long as we purchased in quantities of 10,000 units.
We didn’t know if we were going to sell 100 Fitz Like A Glove Ironing Board Covers. Let alone 10,000.
Victor discovered that after our sewing company cut out the ironing board covers, there was a panel at the side left over. Just wide enough to make a pocket. To contain the cover.

Packaging.
The most wasteful part of every product.
As a manufacturer.
I pay.
And as a consumer.
You pay.
For something that will be thrown away.
But is that a given? That packaging must/will be thrown away?

In 1994, when we launched the Fitz Like A Glove Ironing Board Cover, we approached packing companies.

We were competing with ironing board covers that sold in the supermarket for $4 each.
And when we put 60,000 kilometres on our car.
Every year.
Exhibiting at field days. Home shows. Agricultural shows.
Anyplace where we could spruik.
We were competing with puffy ironing board covers. Magic covers that ironed both sides at once. Self stick, Teflon covers. Where the glue melted as soon as you ironed your first garment.

Ironing boards came in just a few sizes.
That could easily be accommodated by the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover.
There was a standard size Fitz Like A Glove™ Cover. Which fit 99% of most ironing boards.
And an extra large size. Which we made to fit those boards in rural Australia which were sold to rural families. Door to door. Many, many years ago.

G'day from 'The High Country' in rural Victoria.
Thank you for visiting my website. I love that you're here.
Your participation in my rural business is a dream come true. One of the highlights of my life.
Whenever I visit a new website. I always want to know how much postage and handling is.
So upfront. Our flat rate postage and handling charge is $16.95 per parcel.
Regardless of how many items you put in your parcel. Or where you are located within Australia.
We live and work from our remote rural property in 'The High Country' of Victoria.
In the picturesque foothills of the Victorian Alps.
All parcels are despatched via Australia Post.
Our post office is in a remote location. So we post parcels once a week.
We hope you understand how the tyranny of distance affects a business that is in a remote, rural village.
We post parcels on Thursday. From orders received by 3pm on the day before. Wednesday. And send you an email to let you know your parcel is on its way.
For our international customers, please check with Customs in your country to see if they impose extra charges on your parcel once it enters your country.
For my UK customers. It's with regret that I will be unable to continue to post parcels to the UK. The new requirement from the UK is that VAT be collected by all online merchants when an order is placed. And paid to the UK before your parcel leaves Australia. As well as. Calculate the duties payable on your parcel. To be able to complete a customs declaration. Unfortunately. I'm too small a company to justify the infrastructure required to do this.
Every Thursday. From our rural alpine village. We post orders received by 3PM on Wednesday.
We then send you an email to let you know your parcel is on its way.
And we hope you love everything in your parcel. ~Carol❤️
