What you rarely know. When visiting any website. Is how. And why. A product is developed.
Many websites are impersonal. Are big brands. And probably don’t want you to know. The why!
Too many secrets lead to copies.
In my case. We are a small family business in rural Australia. And I really want you to know. The why!
Because it’s the story behind how the Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover became an accidental business.
With more than 400,000 customers. In 30 countries.
It all begins with my partner, Victor Pleshev, an architect. And his mother, Margarita.
Hello. I’m Carol Jones. And some of the best products you and I own have the best stories about how they were created.
The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover has just such a story.
It was never meant to be a business. Just a gift from a son. To his mother. To help her with her ironing when she was recovering from a stroke.
In 1994, Margarita, the mother of Victor Pleshev, an architect, suffered her second stroke in two years. The first stroke left her unharmed. This one was different. She lost the feeling in her right hand and arm. Which made many tasks difficult for her. Things like having to learn all over again how to balance a cup of hot tea. When you can’t feel the cup in your fingers.
Victor and I live on our remote 54 hectare rural property in the picturesque Central Tablelands of NSW. While we were visiting Margarita in Sydney, Victor and I were watching her trying to iron a shirt for Victor’s father. She was determined that this set back would not affect her daily life.
We watched her struggling to keep an ironing board cover on her board. While shifting her husband’s shirt around the board. And. Watched in horror, as her right hand, which was holding her hot iron, dipped and swayed as she tried to exert control over an ironing board cover that was constantly slipping and sliding.
She was a burns victim waiting to happen.
Victor chided her for not having a decent cover that fits her ironing board. There aren’t any, she said.
Not believing her, we went into Sydney the next day to buy her a ‘proper’ cover. We came home with 7. Ranging in price from $12 to $50. Not one of them fit her board like a glove. Elastic edging wasn’t tight enough. She didn’t have the strength to pull a drawstring tight enough. Some padded covers were like giant marshmallows on her board. It was clear that none were suitable.
On the way home to our rural property, Victor said that if he can keep a multi-story building from falling down. He could design an ironing board cover that will fit his mother’s board – like a glove.
Six weeks. And many prototypes later. The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover was born.
Put into an Australia Post post bag. And dropped down the chute of our rural post office in Kandos NSW.
A surprise birthday gift for Margarita.
It was such a success, Margarita’s friends wanted one. And an accidental business is born.
It’s a truism that innovation comes from outside an industry. And that’s what Victor’s architectural insight did. He changed the way an ironing board cover stays snug and tight on any board. A guaranteed ‘Fitz Like A Glove’ experience.
And this is . . .
Why!
