And cheap steam irons leak. At best. And blow up in your face. At worst.
A real estate agent in my rural patch. Puts in their rental agreement. That if. A fire in a rental home. Is caused by a renter's cheap iron. The renter pays for the damage.

So what makes for a good? And safe? Steam iron?
A good steam iron will NOT leak once it reaches the right temperature for steam.
Will NOT overheat. Thereby scorching/burning your garments.
Will NOT start a fire!
WILL give you years of service.
You should expect to pay between $60 to $100.
My recommendations?
For steam irons. Philips. Tefal. Russell Hobbs - (My iron of 8 years!). At the upper price range.
I love Sunbeam appliances. I've had their Sunbeam Cafe series blender, food processor and stand mixer for more than a decade. Without a blip
But unfortunately. I had to return a new iron twice. Because it leaked from every orifice. Twice! And chose my Russell Hobbs iron instead. Customers also don't give Sunbeam a good rating. So if you want a Sunbeam iron. Please check the reviews first.
For steam station irons. My Fitz Like A Glove™ Cover customers wax lyrical about ALL of them. Not only the top-of-the-range Laura Star steam ironing systems. But Aldi's Stirling. At less than $150. When it's part of their Special Buys. But. You have to be very quick! They zoom out the door.
We don't ask much of a steam iron. But we do ask that the components be made of the best materials. That it won't leak. And it won't burn your house down.
