How much you pay for your ironing board cover. Dictates its quality.
In the past, I’ve purchased covers made in Romania. Which cost under $5. – I know. That was a long time ago! – Which looked like they were more suited to be a negligee. Than an ironing board cover.
When browsing for ironing board covers online. There is plenty of choice regarding fabric type.
▶ 100% Cotton
▶ Cotton and polyester mix
▶ 100% synthetic
▶ Rubber backed cotton. Mainly drapery fabric.
▶ Teflon
As someone who has been ironing since I was 8 years old. And made all my own clothes. And bedspreads. Slipcovers. Lampshades. Fabric blinds. Since I was 12 years old. Always with the help of a hot iron. And an ironing board cover.

I love ironing. I love the way the heat of an iron. Transforms a mass of wrinkled fabric. Into something glamourous. And luxurious!
But ironing can only be loved. If. Your ironing board cover does the following.

▶ And doesn’t burn to a crisp as you iron.
Let’s discuss the fabric types on offer.
▶ 100% Cotton.
There is cotton. And then. There’s cotton.
100% cotton comes in two different types of weaves. Crossweave. And diagonal weave. Diagonal weave is also called Cotton Drill.

▶ Crossweave cotton is what most people use for an ironing board cover. It’s a checkerboard weave. Is good quality cotton. And is longer lasting than any synthetic.
The problem with a crossweave is. It can tear easily.
Retailers of crossweave cotton love it because. When. They’ve measured off your meterage.
They just put a slit with a pair of scissors at the edge of the fabric. And then. Tear away!
Also. Under the heat of a hot iron. It will wear out more quickly than a diagonal weave cotton.

▶ Cotton Drill. With its diagonal weave. Is what workwear is made of.
Think Stubby Shorts.
Cotton drill’s diagonal weave is hard to tear. Yet. It’s a very luxurious fabric.
And its heavier weight. Makes for a more durable ironing board cover.
▶ A cotton and polyester mix will not last the distance. If you’re a regular ironer. The polyester will not hold up under the heat of a hot iron. And can often get a singed look from the heat.
▶ 100% synthetic can be the same fabric from my Romanian ironing board cover! It will be thin. Probably not fit your ironing board properly. And to put it bluntly. Drive you nuts at the board.
▶ Rubber backed cotton. Will seduce you into thinking this cover will last until the grave. It’s heavyweight. Not cheap. And always comes in beautiful prints. Because. It’s drapery fabric.
Its Achilles heel is its rubber backing. Which will deteriorate under the heat of your iron.
It deteriorates by splitting first. Then melting. Thus leaving gaps in the backing. Which affects your ability to smoothly glide your iron over your cover.
▶ Teflon. Supposedly the wonder fabric for ironing board covers!
Teflon is a thin plastic coating over a thin piece of fabric. Usually a synthetic.
When that thin plastic coating starts melting under the heat of your iron. It starts to pit. Meaning. Little bits of plastic break into spears. Or shards. And start stabbing your fabric.
If what you’re ironing is lightweight. Like silk. Or polyester. It starts snagging your fabric. Pulling at the weave. Often ruining your garment.
Responsible professional ironers. Who once LOVED Teflon. Because it didn’t burn. Won’t touch it today. Because they have to financially compensate their customers for the damage done to a garment.
So back to the question.

It matters if what you’re looking for is quality and durability.

We live and work from our remote rural property in 'The High Country' of Victoria.
In the picturesque foothills of the Victorian Alps.
All parcels are despatched via Australia Post.
Our post office is in a remote location. So we post parcels once a week.
We hope you understand how the tyranny of distance affects a business that is in a remote, rural village.
We post parcels on Friday. From orders received by 3pm on Wednesday. And send you an email to let you know your parcel is on its way.
For our international customers,
please check with Customs in your country
to see if they impose extra charges on your parcel
once it enters your country.
For my UK customers. It's with regret that I will be unable
to continue to post parcels to the UK. The new requirement from
the UK is that VAT be collected by all online merchants when an order
is placed. And paid to the UK before your parcel leaves Australia.
As well as. Calculate the duties payable on your parcel.
To be able to complete a customs declaration.
