Why is it that we think that a carpenter must have the sharpest saw? To make the best cuts?
That a plumber without a pipe cutter can’t do his job.
That a mechanic without sockets. Ratchets. And hex wrenches. Can’t work on your car.
Yet.
We give scant thought to what makes ironing pleasurable.
Yes. Ironing. Pleasurable. In the same sentence.
Who would have thought?!
As with any skill. And ironing is a skill. It’s only a chore if you don’t have the right tools to transform it into a skill.
The right tools make ironing easier.
There are only 3 essential tools you need.
An iron.
An ironing board.
And an ironing board cover.
Let’s start with the iron.
The better quality your iron. The better end result you’ll have.
If your iron is cheap and leaks. Produces uneven heat. Spits. Has ragged edges that snag your garments. Blows up in your hand.
What’s there to like about that?
Of course you’re going to hate ironing. Because you hate your iron.
Buy a top of the range Tefal. Philips. Braun. Russell Hobbs. And you will see a difference in the way your iron performs.
I absolutely LOVE my Russell Hobbs Powersteam Ultra iron. Heading into year 3 without missing a beat.
And what about your ironing board?
Now that manufacturers have cheapened everything, it’s hard to find a sturdy board.
The cheaper the board. The more you’ll be disappointed.
The metal mesh is so thin on cheap boards, it caves in after a few weeks of ironing.
Have that happen to you with a hot iron in your hand. And you’re a burns accident about to happen.
And what about that rockin’ and rollin’ they do. Back. And. Forth. Every time you put pressure on the metal mesh.
In addition to the swaying. There’s the creaking. And squeaking. With every pressing moment.
I can only recommend one brand of ironing board.
It’s Brabantia. Made in The Netherlands. And sold in top quality independent stores in Australia. But not Bunnings.
Brabantia has a list of stores on their website. You can visit Brabantia online. And see where your nearest Australian retailer is.
They’re expensive. But so worth it. Because they are the only board made the old fashioned way. Made to last a lifetime. Or two. They get handed down from generation. To generation.
Then there’s the humble ironing board cover. The #1 reason people hate to iron.
There is no allure in ironing on baggy underpants.
Or on a cover that slips and slides all the way off your board.
Or a cover that has so many wrinkles and creases in it. You’re ironing those blemishes into your garment.
There is only one solution to ironing board covers that slip and slide.
And that’s to anchor the ironing board cover easily and securely to your ironing board. So that it never moves. EVER!
Which is why.
I only ever iron on.
