I do LOVE to cook.
And to potter around my farmhouse kitchen.
Which is filled with second hand treasures from op shops and charity shops.
And Saturday in my farmhouse kitchen is a special day for me.
Because.
Every Saturday.
I have a BIG date with my kitchen.
And as with all dates, I dress up for the occasion.
In my best crisply ironed jeans. And shirt.
Boots polished to a mirror shine.
Make up on. Bling. Perfume.
And coordinate the colour of my apron to my wardrobe.
Because I can.
Because. I am also the maker of the Roadworks Apron.
Fresh flowers from the garden are put into my favourite vintage cut glass jug.
In spring it’s deeply fragrant Oklahoma roses. Lavender. Blue hebes. And the irresistible climbing jasmine.
In summer it’s fragrant Abelia. Star Jasmine. Iceberg roses. And honeysuckle.
In autumn it’s the autumn leaves on my oaks, maples and ornamental pear trees. And late blooming roses.
In winter it’s fragrant Winter Honeysuckle. And super fragrant Wintersweet.
I put the CD player on. Starting with Motown. Of course.
The Platters. The Supremes. Otis Redding. Brook Benton. Roy Orbison.
Progressing to The Delltones.
Then onto The Manhattan Transfer. The Fifth Dimension.
Finishing with Nat King Cole. And K.D. Lang.
And reminisce for many hours while baking.
Bread. Cakes. Cookies. Because I’m gluten free.
Two loaves of bread. With flaked salt on top.
Butter Almond Cake. Gateau Breton. Crostada.
Home made mayonnaise. Because it’s better than store bought.
Pestos made from ingredients not available commercially. Like my own recipe for Cos Lettuce Pesto. With sunflower seeds. Grated parmesan cheese. Garlic. And bread crumbs made from leftover home made toasted bread with melted cheese on top. Put in the food processor with olive oil. Yummy!
I lose myself in the art of cookery.
And when I’m finished, I look like the scullery maid.
Dusted over with flour from head to toe.
But I love it.
And my Roadworks Apron goes straight into the wash. It could never be worn two days in a row!
Do you have a day, every week, that you look forward to? Where you do something special. That you love.
