I run my worldwide business, The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover And Other Goodies, from my remote rural property in the beautiful Central Tablelands of NSW.
Not only is my location isolated. With no real near neighbours. And the closest rural town a 45 minute drive in one direction.
But I’m an online business.
Which is based on anonymity.
I rarely get to meet my online customers in person. As you do when you own a shop. Where customers are passing by every day. Saying G’day. And two way conversations ensue at the drop of a hat.
But this week was a true bonanza for catching up. And chit chat of the best kind.
It started with an online order from a neighbour who lived across the back lane from me. When I lived in Balmain NSW. Back before 1992!
Accompanied by a long catch up note.
Where they’re now living. What’s happened in the intervening years. Updates on children. And grandchildren. Nothing was left out.
I was thrilled.
Then there was the excited phone call from Mags. She’s become a grandmother. To twin boys. Is in Qld with her daughter. And wants a Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover sent. ASAP!
She’s so totally smitten by her grandsons, I think it will be hard for her to leave to go home in a few weeks.
Next is an email from Pat. A very long standing customer. Dating back to when we first started in 1994.
Are we still in business?
Of course, I email back. And said her question made me laugh.
Laugh, she emails back. I hope this makes you laugh.
And a series of animated jokes are emailed to me at intervals. That are really hilarious.
Topped off by a call from Annemarie.
Her last order was for one of everything we made. Fitz Like A Glove Ironing Board Covers. Sweet Shoos. Roadworks Aprons. Mr Chin’s Laundry Bags. Brass Bristle Brushes. Travel Bug Shoe Bags. And a Log Lugger. Presents for her very large extended family.
This time she’s ordering Roadworks Aprons.
She and her father love them so much, they’re giving them as gifts.
And a story is told about her wonderful father. And how much he means to her. And her husband.
I always think of my customers as a very caring community of people. And this week it was almost like owning a shop. With all the familiarity that goes with knowing your customer. And loving hearing about their lives.
I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
